Tom Black Architects won a competitive tender to restore and redesign the ground floor of the renowned Trades club building in Hebden Bridge town centre following the devastating floods there in on Boxing Day 2015.
Although the first couple of phases of work, the construction of new beam and block suspended floor system and the installation of a new passenger lift were successfully completed, funding for the full conversion of the ground floor was not obtained.
However, in 2024, local charitable organisation, the Northern Powerhouse Boxing Academy secure a lease of the space and undertook work with Tom Black Architects to develop the space to meet their needs.
Over the latter part of 2024 and throughout 2025, the practice worked closely with NBPA to implement the conversion of the existing space to function as the premises for their club. The club provides locals with a safe and welcoming space to participate in their exercise classes.
