New build dwelling houses – Hale View, Railway Site

Railway Site I

Railway Site II

This commission followed on from the construction of pair of new build semi-detached dwelling houses in Huyton. The site on the opposite side of the road was occupied by two single storey commercial units that were owned by the client. This site is a very narrow site occupying a former mineral railway. Tom Black Architects were initially employed to secure planning approval to change the use of the properties from commercial to residential.

The principal of the design was to retain the superstructure of the existing structures while using a steeper roof form to accommodate the bedrooms and bathrooms at first floor level. Given the linear form of the site, the windows serving the bedrooms were formed in the gable walls so as not to impinge on the amenity of the houses opposite.

The finished dwellings make an attractive and contemporary addition to a street with their modern white rendered wall finish and new fibre cement slate roofs.
