Private residential two storey rear extension and whole house refurbishment

Bridge Cottage 001

Bridge Cottage 002

This ambitious two storey extension was one of the practices first commissions. The existing property is on the edge of the attractive village of Wymeswold in Leicestershire. The client wanted to extend and modernise her original property, a long narrow cottage orientated perpendicular to the road with first floor accommodation within the roof space.

The proposal was to include a new entrance portico, new dormer windows serving the first-floor bedrooms, en-suite bathrooms to serve each bedroom and a large two storey oak framed extension at the rear of the property which was to serve as the master bedroom at first floor and a generous open plan kitchen and dining room at ground floor level.
The oak post and beam structure forming the two-storey rear extension was the practices first commission involving this type of structure.

The practice worked closely with oak frame specialists, EWD Crane, a firm specialising in building conservation work with an impressive portfolio of both historic and contemporary building commissions.

The completed project renewed the property giving it a more coherent form. The use of oak in the construction provided the client with a novel and haptic end product.
